Simply put, bride kidnapping is when an abductor takes a wife without her consent. Although this practice has been made illegal in most countries, it is still widely occurring in the world. Even though bride kidnapping across cultures has different origins that vary by region, most of the practices are relatively common. For must cultures, the kidnapper abducts a woman that he chooses to marry. The men often resort to abducting a wife rather than “winning her over” because they may have a low social status, or they may face poverty or criminality. Because of this, the woman’s family may have a high payment expectation for their daughter (“bride price”). There has not been much research on where the practice first originated, however it is most prevalent in the Caucasus and Central Asia.
